California was painted a shade of pearly white this New Year’s Day due to a frightening winter storm that’s plagued parts of the region since Tuesday (Dec. 30).

Five people have died as a result of the snowstorm and left 180 motorists stuck on the roads, but were later rescued by firefighters, USA Today reports.

The surprising weather also knocked out over 8,000 Sacramento residents’ power as a result of the powerful winds, and the storm is reportedly headed for Nevada, Arizona and other parts of the southwest.
