It’s no secret: race is indeed a social construct. But guess what? That doesn’t mean it’s not something that is both highly and – as proven by history time and again – grossly and dangerously functional. When someone says “I’m colorblind” or “I don’t see race,” what they are doing is not only absolving themselves from any social and political responsibilities concerning race, privilege and inequality, but also dismissing cultural significance, merit and contribution. That hasn’t hindered a multitude, however, from subscribing to such dangerous language and mode of thinking, not even our most beloved and respected figures.
