Steve McQueen’s ’12 Years A Slave’ opened this past Friday (Oct. 18) in 19 theaters across America. The independent film brought in roughly $960,000 according to Fox Searchlight.

The historic drama tells the story of Soloman Northrop (Chiwetel Ejofor), a free man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery in Louisiana.
