Authorities are deciding who should be held accountable after a 6-year-old was shot and killed by a 4-year-old in Toms River, New Jersey.
CNN reports Brandon Holt was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. Tuesday (Apr. 9) at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, according to Toms River police Chief Michael Mastronardy.
Brandon was reportedly playing outside the 4-year-old's home after the younger child obtained a .22 caliber rifle from inside and shot Holt in the head from about 15 yards away.
Daniel Watkins, uncle of the 6-year-old boy, told CNN affiliate WCBS that the two children were friends.
"It's really difficult to deal with," Watkins said. "This is something that shouldn't have happened. It's horrible."
The 4-year-old's parents were said to be home at the time of the incident Monday night (Apr. 8).
