5 Secret (And Not-So-Secret) SXSW Shows You Don’t Want to Miss

/ March 15, 2013

Part of the fun of SXSW is catching secret shows, those not officially announced on the festival’s lineup. We’ve kept our ears to the streets (as well as the Tweets) and rounded up five shows you best not miss this week.

Justin Timberlake
The world is in full-blown Justin mode, between his Saturday Night Live host/performing gig last week to promotion around his new album The 20/20 Experience. Many insiders swear that JT will bring his suit and tie routine down to Austin. One of the most likely places Justin will probably pop up, if he does show, will be during one of MySpace’s (which he just so happens to be an investor in) series of secret shows throughout the week.

What started as a rumor is now definitely true. The Purple One is performing in conjunction with Samsung Galaxy. Details are still slim but it seems that Prince will rock out with a huge band for Samsung’s closing party. The one time you wish you didn’t have an iPhone! (A Tribe Called Quest is also on the bill)!

French Montana (+ Miley Cyrus?) at Fader Fort
On 3/16, French Montana will close out Fader’s annual Fader Fort. We’re sure Frenchie will bring out his Coke Boyz and whatever skripper crowd Austin has, but we’re more curious to see if his new bff Miley Cyrus shows up.

Chief Keef and GBE
Chief Keef will bring his ratchet rap to SXSW tomorrow with a not-so-secret Ray Ban show. He’ll be joined by his GBE squad for his first official concert since returning home from serving 60 days in juvenile detention.

Def Jam Showcase
Hip-hop heavyweight label Def Jam is hosting its big showcase on 3/15 at 9pm ET. The bill features “All Gold Everything” boy Trinidad James as well as Big Krit, Juelz Santana, Fabolous and “surprise guests.” The label is full of talent and many of its artists are on the ground in Austin. Don’t be surprised if Pusha T or The-Dream make cameo appearances.
