5 Things We Know About Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey's 'American Idol' Fight'

Keenan Higgins Posted October 4, 2012

The Internet went crazy after TMZ obtained footage of American Idol judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey getting into it at a North Carolina audition for the upcoming season.

We had our suspicions that there would be some friction—we all know there's only room for one diva!—but never did we think it would result in an all-out screaming match.

Check out the bullet points below to see the confirmed facts in the whole ordeal.

1. It Was All Good Just A Week Ago...

After rumors of a suspected beef between the two, Mariah "cleared the air" (or so we thought) in an American Idol press conference, saying, "How are we gonna feud in two days?" See the video below:

It looks like those "few days" ended up being accurate.

2. They Have A Song Together

Lest we forget, the two actually had a song together—and an accompanying video—with the Target-inspired "Up Out My Face (Remix)." The two actually looked like the best of friend too. We guess it's called "acting." Check out the video below:

3. This Isn't The First Report Of Their Rumored Beef On American Idol

Reports claimed that when Mariah first found out Nicki would be joining her on the American Idol judges panel, she hung up the phone without saying a word. However, a spokesperson out of MC's camp stated that the songstress was, "too much of a lady to ever do such a thing." In her defense though, Mariah did appear to be the calmer of the two during the argument. We're just saying.

4. Mariah Sent Out A Subliminal Tweet After The Big Blowout

Shortly after the video hit the Internet, Mariah's official Twitter sent out the following tweet:

Of course, she deleted it shortly after (thank God for screengrabbing)—which was probably influenced by her management. The now-infamous "whyyyyyyyyyy" tweet derived from Mariah's actual words in the argument, which is low quality but can still be clearly heard in the video.

5. Nick Cannon and Ryan Seacrest have spoken out.

Nick Cannon told Access Hollywood Live:
“When you think about what the show is actually about and represents… I feel like it’s taking away from the quality of what ‘Idol’ is all about. This is about people accomplishing their dreams, experts guiding these young people to do what they’ve done. My wife is the strongest and classiest woman that I’ve ever met, if you watch the video, she just maintains her composure… I don’t think she’s moved by the theatrics and pageantry of it all. She signed up to do a job to help young people… this is like a sidebar. I hope that’s not what this show becomes, about the catfights,” he explained. “The show is solely about a singing competition, that’s why America loves these shows, they want to see people reach a certain goal or win… and then to make it about something it’s not, [it] kind of shows that the producers and the network are losing their foot a little bit. If I’m producing a show about young people accomplishing their dreams, that’s what I want the show to be about, not all the side pageantry… my wife is strong, classy and she maintains her strength.”

Ryan Seacrest told TMZ:
“We want them to be on this panel together. This is a good team, a great team, to go out and look for the next American Idol. [There's] nothing wrong with disagreeing … That’s gonna happen, and it’s okay. These are all very different individuals with different perspectives and different opinions that provide for interesting conversation and dialogue and feedback for the contestants.”

There is way too much money at stake here! These women are getting somewhere in the range of $20 million to pick out next American pop superstar. If not for themselves, they need to at least tough it out for the sake of music's future star. Besides, two women coming from African American roots fighting live on TV isn't a good look for the culture overall.
