6 Degrees Of Separation: Amy Winehouse, Jay-Z, Nas, And Slick Rick

Movies & TV

Amy Winehouse holds a special place in hip-hop. Her rebel attitude and love for old soul music drew attraction from both rap fans and rappers themselves.

We really became aware of her own love for hard rhymes and beats when she name dropped Slick Rick on “Me and Mr. Jones.”

“You made me miss the Slick Rick gig (oh Slick Rick) / You thought I didn’t love you when I did (when I did),” she belts out on the song’s opening verse.

Though it was never documented if she had the opportunity of meeting The Ruler, Amy definitely spent some time with one Nasir Jones (as shown above). We like to believe that these free spirits connected on a musical level and secretly recorded an LP that will someday see the light of day (we can dream can’t we?).

Even, the biggest rap mogul of them all paid homage to the troubled English star’s talent. Jay-Z so famously remixed one of Winehouse’s biggest hits, ironically titled “Rehab.”

The connection becomes even more real when you ponder on the fact that Jay and Nas once shared a bitter fued but put their differences to the side, along with Uncle Rick recording tracks with both Jay and Nas. The six degrees of separation that these immortals share is uncanny.

With her physical gone, we can remember Amy Winehouse for the beautiful music she brought to the world. Hip-hop will always love her.
