Superbowl Coke Ad Called Racist by Arab-American Groups

Superbowl Coke Ad Called Racist by Arab-American Groups

VIBE Posted January 31, 2013

Coke is coming under fire for a new commercial that Arab-American groups are saying is racist.

The new spot for the upcoming 2013 Super Bowl features a "Chase Ad" that depicts stereotypes of Arabs. Many Islamic-American group have spoken out and want the commercial changed before the big game on Sunday.

Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, released this statement in an email:

"The Coke commercial for the Super Ball [sic] is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish Camel Jockeys, and they have no chance to win in the world.

"What message is Coke sending with this?" asked Abed Ayoub, ADC's director of legal and policy affairs. "By not including the Arab in the race, it is clear that the Arab is held to a different standard when compared to the other characters in the commercial," he said.

NBC News Reports:
A spokesperson from the long-time beverage company denied that the Coke ad is racist. Lauren Thompson said the goal in the Super Bowl commercial was to bring out some cinematic elements from vintage movies and characters. "Coca-Cola is an inclusive brand enjoyed by all demographics. We illustrate our core values, from fun and refreshment to happiness, inspiration and optimism across all of our marketing communications," she said.
