Stars in their own right turned into fans last night as they gathered to pay tribute to singer/songwriter Carole King’s illustrious 50-year career. As MusicCares’ Person of the Year, King was honored last night (Jan. 24) in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The celebration featured adaptations of her greatest hits by some of music’s biggest names with performances by Gloria Estefan, Will.i.am, Steven Tyler and more.
The night included a rendition of “So Far Away” by Pink, “Crying in the Rain” by Miguel and Kacey Musgraves, and “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” by Alicia Keys. Lady Gaga also delivered a very personal dedication of “You’ve Got A Friend” to King, with a special anecdote.
"I would crank up this song so loud," Gaga said. "And I really believed so much, Carole, that you were my friend. So thank you so much for the way you sing right to us in your music."
An organization dedicated to providing musicians to with necessary aid, the night also featured a silent auction that raised $120,000 for handwritten Tapestry lyrics by King and $70,000 from Zac brown for a customized Acura. Overall, MusicCares raised over $5.5 million dollars for its cause.
