Alicia Keys is living out her “this Girl is on Fire” motto. Fresh off her MTV Video Music Awards performance, where she debuted the title track off her upcoming album Girl on Fire, Keys releases another new song today, titled “Not Even the King.” Warning: It’s a real tearjerker. Lyrics take precedence over production on “Not Even the King,” a switch from the bigger anthemic sound of “Girl on Fire.” Keys, who first performed the track on Friday night’s Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon, commands attention right from the start thanks to the stripped down setup. “They offered the world just to have what we got, but I found the world in you,” she croons over slow piano, and nothing else. “So darling listen, your arms around me worth more than a kingdom/ Yeah believe that, the trust that we feel the kings never felt that/ Yeah, this is the song we sing, we don’t need anything… They can’t afford what we got, not even the king.” Take a listen below (have your tissues ready) and let VIBE know what you think. Girl on Fire, Keys’ fifth LP, is out Nov. 27.
