Ashton Kutcher Popchips Ad Pulled After Allegations of Racism

Ashton Kutcher Popchips Ad Pulled After Allegations of Racism

Ashton Kutcher for Popchips

A recent Popchips ad featuring Ashton Kutcher dressed as a Bollywood producer was pulled after allegations of racism (via TMZ).

The ad, which premiered on Popchips’ website, featured Kutcher dressed as a number of personalities, including a burly biker and a peace-loving hippie. But it was the Indian character “Raj” that sparked offense when Kutcher appeared rocking brown-face makeup.

Blogger Anil Dash called the commercial "a hackneyed, unfunny advertisement featuring Kutcher in brownface talking about his romantic options, with the entire punchline being that he's doing it in a fake-Indian outfit and voice."

"I think the people behind this Popchips ad are not racist,” Dash later explained. “I think they just made a racist ad."

Popchips soon removed the ad and CEO Keith Belling issued a statement saying, “"We did not intend to offend anyone. I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended."
