Azealia Banks Boycotting "Racist" Dolce & Gabbana Collection

Azealia Banks Boycotting "Racist" Dolce & Gabbana Collection

VIBE Posted October 20, 2012

VIBE Aug./Sept. 2012 cover girl Azealia Banks isn't afraid to speak her mind, even if it gets her into some hip-hop beef. But Banks latest harsh words aren't any disses for T.I. or Iggy Azalea. The "212" femcee is sounding off at fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.

The Italian designers sent down a very controversial Spring 2013 collection during Milan Fashion Week last month. Said to be inspired by their Sicilian roots, some of the models adorned the D&G catwalk wearing burlap dresses and earrings with images of black women wearing plantation-era cornucopias on their head. While the images were of the first African settlers in Sicily, many believed that the "mammy" images romanticized the American slave era. To add to the non-P.C. element of the show, not one black model walked the runway.

Banks, who mentions the designers in her fashion-forward track "Van Vogue," took to Twitter to vent her disgust and announce that she was "definitely boycotting Dolce & Gabanna [sic]."

"Whoever designed that racist ass Dolce and Gabanna collection needs a swift kick in the mouth and a big dick up the ass," tweeted Banks. "I really hate when people do corny, racist things then try to justify it as 'art.' It's all just really unnecessary. The clothes in the collection were fine without all the "black mammie" imagery."

While she may be on the outs with the Italian fashion house, beforehand Banks did make a new friend on Twitter -- supermodel Naomi Campbell. Even Mac Miller chimed in on the new friendship, noting that it was "tight as f---k."
