Today, May 4 marks the one-year anniversary since the passing of the Beastie Boys' MCA, real name Adam Yauch.
On Friday, the late Yauch was honored with his own park in Brooklyn. The newly coined Adam Yauch Park is located at Columbia Place and State Street, just beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Known formerly as the Palmetto Playground, it measures only about one-tenth of an acre, but it's where the Beastie spent his formative years.
The ceremony included speeches from fellow Beastie Boys member Ad-Rock, Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz, as well as Yauch's mother, Frances Yauch.
"Adam made us so proud of him, and I'm proud to have this park in his name," said Francis Yauch in her speech.
"Thanks to all that came out to Adam Yauch Park today," tweeted Ad-Rock after the ceremony.
Adam Yauch died at the age of 47 after battling salivary gland cancer.
