Remember when you came to Blockbuster Video to rent a movie, yet left with two buckets of un-popped popcorn, some Sour Patch Kids, and a pretty dope movie? Say goodbye to an era.
Blockbuster Video came in like gangbusters and killed the "mom and pop" video store. Now, it an ironic twist, iWhatevers and live streaming have killed Blockbuster Video.
After slowly but steadily closing down locations for the better part of a decade, the company announced Wednesday (11/6) it is finally going to close the final 300 locations by early 2014, and discontinue its rental-by-mail system by the end of 2013. The brand will remain, however, offering movies digitally.
While Blockbuster Video isn't the only one who should have abandoned physical DVDs (looking at you, Netflix!), this marks the official end of the video store era. That's not to say that the local Family Video or indie store won't endure, it's just the sign of the times.
If you're still subscribing to this manner of distribution, please note that all retail and by mail DVD operations end early-January 2014. "This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer. "Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings."
This means all those who subscribe to DISH will enjoy the company's significant video library. As it transitions into a streaming service for the general market, we will fondly recall the excitement of our favorite film being on the shelf, the jokes associated with picking a dud, and the epic history of box cover art.
