Boomshots Heavy Rotation: Stephen Marley, Damian Marley, Biggie Smalls; Elephant Man; Dennis Brown...

Posted November 19, 2010

One good thing about Boomshots, when they hit you feel no pain. But you might make "the ugly face" when you hear tunes like this. Okay you have been warned. We're in a classical mood this Friday cause we're busting some heavy artillery—but remember, just musical shots. Are we clear? Good...

First up is a serious banger from Stephen Marley featuring his younger brother Damian aka Junior Gong. The song is called "Jah Army" and the style is militant. First the Marley brothers looped up a wicked piece of Sly & Robbie dub from Black Uhuru's "General Pentitentiary" riddim, then when they were done blasting holes in it, they gave the last verse to their fellow Jamaican countryman, the late great Biggie Smalls... "Touch my chedda, feel my Beretta buck!" Run that....

Tad's Productions just dropped the Tan Bad riddim this week, and it's just my cut of tea: a high-energy dancehall groove that still sounds like live reggae. No surprise that Elephant Man has one of the baddest tunes on the Tan Bad with "Show Me The Wine." Elly, your swag tun right up. Let it go...

Last but certainly not least we close it out with Dennis Brown, the Crown Prince of Reggae, who's the focus of a new 3-disc box set. The first two discs are packed with both classic and rare singles from the man called D.Brown, but even more crucial is the DVD that captures his triumphant 1979 performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, backed by the amazing Lloyd Parkes & We The People Band (with a horn section that could blow down the walls of Jericho). You know we had to give you a small preview, so in comes a musical shot called "The Drifter." Run tuuuuunnneee....new double CD anthology
