Bruno Mars On Song For Nicki Minaj, The Song He Wish He Produced

Clover Hope / October 4, 2010

Nah. Like I said, I just write music. I’m not doing it for a certain image. I’m just me. I’m just writing songs, and I’m a positive dude. Writing songs like “Nothin’ On You,” that’s me trying to make a girl feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. And that goes for “Just The Way You Are” and “Billionaire.” It’s a recession. [People are] struggling without any money, but making the bright side of it, the positive side of it. We’re still having fun and dreaming that one day we’ll all be billionaires, so that’s who I am.

What other rappers would you love to collaborate with or write a song for?

I wanna collaborate with Gucci Mane. And I’m in talks with Snoop. Haven’t gotten in with Snoop yet. I’m a fan of Kid Cudi. I mean, there’s so many out there that I can’t wait to get in with.

What do you think of Nicki Minaj?

Shhh… That’d be incredible. Drake, of course. I think I got a song for Nicki. I just gotta find a way to get to her.

You have a song written already?

I’ve been working on something.

You want to pitch to her?

[Laughs] Yeah. Can VIBE hook that up? Can you get me on the phone with her?

Yeah, we can try.

[Laughs] Alright. Try to make that happen.

What’s your favorite song right now, other than your own?

I love “Fancy” by Drake and Swizz Beatz and T.I. My guilty pleasure is “Teach Me How To Dougie.” I wish I produced that.

What should fans expect from you in the next 10 years?

In 10 years? I’m all about my live show. The reason why I’m doing this whole music thing, Clover, is because my dream is to perform every night. That’s my passion. That’s what I grew up doing. The guys that I idolize, that’s what they do. I really take into consideration transforming the song and bringing them to life onstage. That’s when I have the most fun. That’s when I’m free, so hopefully 10 years from now, I’m still touring and I’m working on my tenth album.

Where do you get all your hats from?

Aw man. I get ’em from the most random places. I got one in California from the Slauson Swap Meet. There’s a little store where they sell all these pimp hats and you can get ‘em in yellow and pink and orange. I just go for the grays.
