The rush to imagine new ways to take recognizable fairy tales and translate them into chart-topping TV shows isn’t as big of a business as advertised. Which is why this latest from CBS is all the more intriguing.

The need hasn’t gone away altogether as shows like Once Upon a Time and Grimm keep the lights on. According to Deadline, CBS, which has improved their roster of television shows in recent years, has decided to develop a show called Dorothy.

Set in New York City, the show is inspired by The Wizard of Oz and will be designed as basically E.R. in New York City. Executive produced by Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman (Elementary, Emily Fox (Ghost Whisperer) will handle scripting duties if the show goes forward.

L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been pursued for screen adaptation and interpretations for decades now. Hopefully, they will be able to create a show that merges the mystical with the medical. They’re not the only one developing a show around Oz, as Syfy is developing a program called Warriors of Oz, a mini-series project from director Timur Bekmambetov.

Who would you cast in the lead as Dorothy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
