The remake of the 1976 music cult classic Sparkle just got more interesting! According to Entertainment Weekly, Cee-Lo has joined the cast as an opening act in one of the movie's many performance sequences.
This version of Sparkle will be directed by Salim Akil and written by his wife, Mara Brock Akil. The leading ladies, who will play sisters in the film, include Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Jordin Sparks.
The starring trio recently had their first meet up for rehearsal and tweeted the above pic. Ejogo will play the role of "Sister," Tika will play "Delores" and Jordin is the title character, "Sparkle."
It gets cooler...
Whitney Houston will play the girls' mother, Derek Luke will play the role of "Stixx," Omari Hardwick will play "Levi" and R. Kelly signed on for the soundtrack.
The original Sparkle starred Phillip Michael Thomas, Irene Cara and was scored by Curtis Mayfield. It was about three sisters who made it out of the hood because of their singing ability, but ended up battling the harsh realities and challenges that come along with show business like drug abuse, exploitation and more.
It's going to be interesting to see what this new remake will look and sound like. Speaking of sound, you may recognize this song below:
