The ALS #IceBucketChallenge is the newest viral social media craze, but this time it is at least one for a good cause. In an effort to raise awareness and money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Internet users are dousing themselves in buckets of ice water and then donating to the ALS Association.
ALS is an ailment with a current fatal rate of 100 percent. Gradually shutting down the body’s muscle movements, the disease eventually causes its victims to lose their ability to move and breathe. The #IceBucketChallenge calls for supporters to complete the chilling feat, donate money and then elect a friend to do the same.
And just like all good viral crazes, the celebrities have gotten in on it. From NFL teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, to Martha Stewart and Bill Gates, the ALS Association has received a literal outpouring of famous support.
Oprah, Kevin Hart, Justin Timerlake, Kerry Washington, Adam Levine and Jimmy Fallon all got in on it too. Peep their pledges below:
