A homeless Chicago woman has been arrested a record 396 times over the past 35 years and has been ordered by a judge to seek help.
Shermain Miles, 51, was accused of attacking a city alderman and appeared in court Monday (June 10) where she also pled guilty in two separate cases of trespassing and drinking alcohol on public property. She took a plea deal from the Cook County Judge that will send her to a mental health and substance abuse treatment program, Chicago Times reports.
"All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK?" Judge Peggy Chiampas told Miles. "But you've got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well."
She thanked the judge and said, "I’m not that person."
Miles has been held at the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln since December for violating parole from an armed robbery conviction several years prior. According to ABC News, her criminal track record includes being arrested 65 times for disorderly conduct and has used at least 83 different aliases.
