Serving up a smorgasbord of comedy, Gary Owen knows how to stay funny. With a line of projects rolling in for the seasoned funny man, he's ready to conquer the smaller screens while juggling his stand-up shows at the same (damn) time.
He recalls getting a bundle of nerves when he first started performing his material. “I remember when I first started doing stand-up you would just want to get on stage and get butterflies," he says. "You couldn’t wait to drive there, you were excited and everything else the more you do it.”
Now the excitement is in overdrive as Owen readies his newest endeavor, truTV's “Upload with Shaquille O’Neal.” The variety show -- sharing the same producers of “Tosh.0” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” -- pits Owen as host alongside 4-time NBA champ Shaq and throws in other comedians for their take on viral nonsense.
When asked if the show posed any challenges, Owen had none. “It was actually pretty easy," he says. "To me, this is easier than acting in a movie.”
The "Think Like A Man" star did become the subject of a prank in the show's first episode. While he kept mum on the details, he says he experienced his own form of a “Punk’D” joke spearheaded by Shaq that completely blindsided him.
From appearing on classic shows like the "Wayans Bros." to "Comedy Central Stand-Up," Owen is also keeping busy and prepping new movie roles in "Ride Along” starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, as well as a “Think Like A Man” sequel.
In the meantime, Owen says he’ll be on the road, keeping crowds rolling stand-up routines and still manages to find the drive in performing. “The longer you do stand-up the more material you should get because you’re more experienced in life,” Owen says. “Just to do the comedy club is still great.”
“Upload with Shaquille O’Neal” debuts Feb. 21 at 10:30 p.m. on truTV. To catch Owens in action, check out his show dates here.
