Two New York police officers who shot and killed a teen gunman have been placed on administrative duty.

Officials say 16-year-old Kimani Gray was hanging out with a group of other males in Brooklyn Saturday night (March 9). Gray reportedly began to act suspiciously when the undercover cops approached Gray from an unmarked red car.

The teen then pointed a .38-caliber revolver at the officers who fired 11 shots at Gray in response, striking him several times. Gray was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital, the AP reports.

According to the New York Post, police sources said Gray had prior offenses including grand larceny and inciting a riot. The Post also reported that Gray’s friends witnessed the cops open fire, including Devonte Brown who said “he was screaming, ‘Stop! I’m not running!”

The officers — whose names have not been released by the NYPD — were listed in stable condition after treatment for trauma and tinnitus.
