Dennis Rodman Helps Brings Basketball Diplomacy to North Korea

Dennis Rodman Helps Brings Basketball Diplomacy to North Korea

Christopher Harris Posted February 26, 2013

In an act of sports diplomacy, former NBA star Dennis Rodman has ventured to North Korea to participate in a documentary being produced by Vice Media.

The five-time NBA champion, alongside three current members of the Harlem Globetrotters will be running a basketball camp for children and playing pickup games with the communist country's best athletes.

"Is sending the Harlem Globetrotters and Dennis Rodman to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea [DPRK] strange? In a word, yes," said Shane Smith, Vice's founder. "But finding common ground on the basketball court is a beautiful thing."

Smith will host the upcoming documentary series which will air on HBO beginning in April. Rodman may seem like an unlikely candidate to aid torn relations between the U.S. and North Korea but he is actually one of King Jong Un's favorite players. The young militant leader is a huge fan of basketball and grew up liking the Chicago Bulls' teams of the 90's. --Christopher Harris
