Based on the James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales book, an oral history on America’s favorite sports network comes to the big screen, and pockets a director.

After Fox acquired the rights to the New York Times bestseller in May 2011, the project stalled after the studio couldn’t figure out how to adapt it into a feature. Fast forward a few years, and Focus Features has taken the tome Those Guys Have All The Fun: Inside the World of ESPN into a potential box office slam dunk.

Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine) was immediately announced as the film’s helmer, which is sure to confound fans of 30 For E0.

Known more for his serious work, Cianfrance has shown his love of sports by directing the Dick’s Sporting Goods commercials. Producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who are working with Focus on 50 Shades of Grey, were also behind the Oscar award-winning The Social Network with David Fincher, and this is looking like another touchdown in the making.

Given the stark realism Cianfrance uses to drench his projects in, there’s no doubt that he can turn this series of talking heads into something uniquely special. Up next for the filmmaker is the adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s The Light Between Oceans.

We will keep you posted as more develops about this picture. But who do you see playing Bill Simmons, Chris Berman, Mike Ditka, Bob Knight and Robin Roberts in the film?
