Diggy Simmons vs. J.Cole: What Really Happened?
Diggy Simmons fires shots at J. Cole again. What? Wasn’t this Grade-C USDA beef put to bed before it started? Alas, one of the lamest spats in hip-hop continues to sizzle.
The tantrums tiff began over the summer when Diggy fired lyrical shots in “What You Say To Me.” The surprisingly good rap taunted Cole (calling him a “broke back Jake Gyllenhaal”) for his alleged earlier shots in “Purple Rain” and “Grew Up Fast” and dispelled rumors that the Roc Nation rapper had relations with Angela Simmons, Diggy’s sister. “Who Dat, who dat? You know who it is/ Heard you lying on my sis, tellin’ people that you hit/ When ya album drops, I’ma hit you with your brick/ So I’ma bomb first on you since you wanna riff,” Diggy rapped. The Diggster later rescinded the song as a leak that wasn’t meant for release but even the family patriarch, Reverend Run of Run-DMC, gave the tyke props. “J Cole.. Puts out 2 records Dissing family & Diggy & nobody cared.. Some1 leaks a old Diggy record & there’s a problem?” he tweeted.
Taking the moral high road, Jermaine largely played the sleeping lion until recently, when he spit a slick line during a Kendrick Lamar show which many felt was directed towards a certain hip-hop scion: “Picture me hating on a young ni— with talent…caked out on his allowance.” The pint-sized rapper swiftly responded on Monday (9/17) with “Fall Down” in which he cleared up any ambiguity; he was gunning for Cole. “I guess I rattled you, snaggletooth/You know better/Thought J stood for Jermaine, not Jet Setter/You seen me and shook my hand, coppin’ pleas in person… Now you wack, less than a man, mention me in verses. Sneak disses and jabs, I don’t really see the benefit/But I guess you lame enough, probably keep you relevant.”
Davey versus Goliath; it’s almost cute in its ridiculousness. Diggy isn’t even technically grown (He’s just 17!) and Cole, by comparison, looks like the mature adult trying to reason with a finicky child. The kicking of the dead pony is becoming tiresome, Dig. You no longer have to prove your lyrical adeptness—the boy can rap, we all know that—so why keep rehashing a non-issue? It’s awww-inducing that you want to protect your sister’s reputation from a possible non-smash that may or may not have happened years ago, but she’s a big girl who can fight her own battles. Speaking of protection, where is older bro and fellow rapper JoJo Simmons? Technically, shouldn’t he be defending your sister’s honor? Diggy, we love you for being you: A precocious boy-next-door from Run’s House who grew into a nice, respectful young man that any of us (of age) would be more than happy to bring home to Mom. Make songs about falling in love in homeroom or driving your friends to the mall and we’re just fine with that. You’re not a tough guy nor do we want you to devolve into one. Let the goons play in their sandbox.
