Donell Jones: 'You'll Never Know If You Can Trust Someone If You Don't Let Go'

When you date somebody new and they’ve been through a lot of drama with other relationships, it’s hard for them to give their heart to another person. I’m really being honest when I say I used to be one of those guys who broke hearts in the second verse of “Love Like This.” But as men get older we grow. We really understand it’s ok to be with one woman. When you reach that level of understanding, that’s when you become a man.

When you’re in a relationship and you love the person that you’re with, it shouldn’t be a problem proving to someone that you love them and that they can trust you. The best way you can prove it to somebody is by your actions and your communication. Give somebody a chance. You’ll never know if you can trust someone if you don’t let go and give somebody a shot. It could be the next best thing that ever happened to you in life but you have to move on, don’t live in the past.

You don’t want to bring your last relationship to the new relationship because the new one will never work if you’re thinking about the things that the last guy did to you. It’s a completely different person and you should treat it as that. Don’t focus on the negative that somebody else might have taken you through. This man might not be like that, or this woman might not be like that. I’ve had someone leave a cell phone in a room where it was on and they called it and was listening to what was going on in the room. I think that’s crazy but it works. I was dirty at the time so I got caught. I shouldn’t have been doing what I was doing but if a person has to go that far to catch you⎯I’m talking about if you feel that bad about someone⎯then you shouldn’t be with them anyway.

I got into the business when I was about 20. When you’re young, everything is you’re out on the road, you’re traveling a lot you see a lot of beautiful women and it’s fun at that point but you start to realize, “Hey I got somebody who loves me, I need to focus on this.” And then when you start having children that’s when you really start realizing that this is not that important I need to focus on my family, that’s what’s important. ⎯As Told To Starrene Rhett
