Since making trailer trash turned ill lyricist the iconic come-up story in 2002's 8 Mile, Eminem continues to shy away from big-screen glory after he allegedly turned down the lead role in Neill Blomkamp's forthcoming sci-fi thriller Elysium. Wired reports that rap trio Die Antwoord's Ninja was first considered for the part but after he, too, turned down the offer, the director settled with Bourne Legacy star Matt Damon.
Elysium, set for release Aug. 23, depicts car snatcher Mac DeCosta who ventures to an utopian space station ruled by filthy rich folks set in the year 2154. As Earth continues to rot and the 1 percent live in the lap of luxury, the shaven-headed bad boy must head to Elysium, the only spot that can offer a cure and save the rest of mankind.
Blomkamp -- who also helmed District 9 -- found a huge fan in Ninja, real name Watkin Tudor Jones, but the artist said he didn't want his break-out role to unfold in a blockbuster film. "It was a fucked-up, difficult decision," he told Wired.
When it came to calling on Slim Shady, there was one prerequisite that Em allegedly needed to say yes: the flick had to be shot in his hometown of Detroit. Production for the film took place in Los Angeles.
There is hope yet for at least one of the rappers to collaborate with Blomkamp. Ninja and Die Antwoord bandmate Yo-Landi Vi$$er are set to star in the director's upcoming project Cappie.
