The Malaysian government banned a planned performance by neo-soul singer Erykah Badu Tuesday (Feb. 28) after a photo circulated of her with the Arabic word for Allah written on her body in temporary ink.
Yahoo News reports that Badu was scheduled to perform tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur. Information Minister Rais Yatim stated the writing was "an insult to Islam and a very serious offense and had triggered public criticism that could jeopardize national security and cause a negative impact to the government's image."
Badu had arrived in Malaysia already and was prepping for her show, but now she can only stay as a tourist. The photo of Badu attracted attention from Malaysian officials after it was published in its English-language daily The Star. The managing director for shows in Malaysia s working on having Badu still perform, but from the looks of it, the government's mind is staunchly made up.
