Continuing the tainting of a beloved childhood character, a man dubbed as ‘Evil Elmo’ was arrested for wreaking havoc on the Girl Scouts of America. Dan Sandler, 49, the man behind the Elmo suit with a history of bizarre behavior, has reportedly attempted to extort $2 million dollars from the organization through a series of threatening emails and voicemail messages.
"I want a telecommute job from home of life at 150K,” he wrote a supervisor he met while on a temp job with the nonprofit last year. "Or a two million dollar cash settlement. As you know, the newspapers like to cover my evil Elmo scenario."
Abusing the attention he has garnered, Sandler threatened to spread false rumors about sex abuse in the Girls Scouts if the supervisor did not comply with his demands.
"How you treat me as a person will go a long way in regards to how I treat the Girl Scouts in the press, on the Internet and on u-tube,” he allegedly wrote.
Assistant District Attorney Lauren Littman described Sandler’s emails as “increasingly alarming and bizarre,” while his defense attorney Lawrence Gerzog attributes his behavior to “mental health issues,” adding that his threats to the Girls Scouts were empty.
Sandler also had previous legal trouble as ‘Evil Elmo.’ He was arrested in New York City last year for a mid-traffic disturbance where he allegedly spewed out an anti-Semitic rant. He pled guilty to disorderly conduct.
Concerning his most recent arrest, ‘Evil Elmo’ was arraigned on several charges including grand larceny, to which he pleads not guilty. He is being held on a $200,000 bail.
