Rapper Ja Rule is taking his talents to the small screen. Not even a month after completing his house arrest following a two-year prison bid, the Queens MC/ actor has already loaded up his itinerary with studio time alongside N.O.R.E. and former Murder Inc. mate Ashanti, along with an upcoming flick I'm In Love With A Church Girl co-starring Adrienne Bailon. Now, Ja, real name Jeffrey Atkins, is in talks for a potential reality show in partnership with 51 Minds Entertainment and esteemed television producer/ writer Cris Abrego.
“First and foremost anything that I try to do, I try to bring my professionalism and creativity to the table and I think with myself and Cris," the 37-year-old rapper tells VIBE. "When all of our minds get together, collectively we all get together, it's going to be incredible."
Fans can expect to see a softer side of the Hollis native, who is also a husband and father to three kids: Brittany, Jeff Jr, and Jordan, with wife Aisha. "It is a good family show. Television needs more positivity, especially young black families to look at," he explains. "To see that it is not just negativity when it comes to Black couples on television, but also a lot of good families out there raising kids and doing good things out there. And also have fun out there and it doesn’t have to be corny, but young parents raising three beautiful kids and doing it our own way and it’s special. Its got to have the edge, its got to be sexy, its got to be fun and that’s what people gravitate towards.”
Abrego will be adding Ja's new business endeavor to a lengthy TV résumé that includes a hand in such shows as VH1's guilty pleasures T.I. & Tiny, For The Love of Ray J and Flavor of Love.
"I've been in this business long enough to know that everyone thinks they belong on television, that they have a big enough personality, or interesting enough lifestyle, that regular people will want to watch them," Chris tells VIBE. "Ja is one of those rare cases where it really is the truth. You can't help but watch this guy. That he's a legend in the music business, one of the greats, is almost beside the point. The simple fact is, he's a truly memorable personality with a fascinating life to match. And we're extremely excited to have the opportunity to create some equally memorable television around him."
Though the project is only in its beginning stages, Ja promises that the show will be worthwhile. “I am very excited and I love Cris," Ja said. "[51 Minds] do great work. Their work speaks for itself and this marriage that we just made is going to be a long one.”—Adelle Platon (@adelleplaton)
