Be prepared to now set trends on Facebook.
The social media giant announced Wednesday (June 12) that it will be introducing clickable hashtags on the site. While it is a minor upgrade, it still lags behind the trending race behind Twitter, Tumblr, Google+ and Instagram, who already employ the pound-signed phrases.
The move still mark FB's intention to create a larger community feel on the social site, making it easier for strangers (and not just "friends") to find your interests and also spark a discussion online. It should come as no surprise that ad dollars will also be embedded in the hashtags as it has been on its character-based counterpart Twitter.
"We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations," Greg Lindley, product manager for hashtags, wrote in the post.
Facebook said it will make the hashtags available for users within the coming weeks. #StayTuned
