Like Father, Like Will Smith’s Son: Jaden’s Karate Kid Opens at Number 1

In 2010, it’s become old hat to see a Will Smith film debut at number one, but look out—it’s next generation time. Now we have to get used to Will and Jada’s kids getting into the blockbuster movie business.

Not only did The Karate Kid starring Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson and Jackie Chan, open at the top spot grossing 56 million; it also kicked down its competition, The A-Team, which trailed behind in 2nd place at 26 million. And The Karate Kid, co-produced by Will’s Overbrook Entertainment, also earned $20 million dollars more than expected by industry insiders.

But my fellow movie-going audience members, that’s only half the story. Because of its strong opening weekend start, industry experts believe The Karate Kid should easily gross 200 million dollars before the summer season’s end. Hmm, sound familiar? Having a bit of Big Willie déjà vu? Mama Jada and Papa Will must be very proud, indeed.—Ronke Idowu Reeves
