First Listen: Sonya Teclai “Own”

Music

/ June 10, 2014

For the title of her 2013 debut album, Eritrean-Egyptian Hip Hop/R&B vocalist Sonya Teclai chose Veridical Paradox, a nod to her mixed New York-based/Cali-raised roots and street-savvy/sensual style. Fitting, but if puns were all there were to her, we wouldn’t be premiering a new track from her presently untitled forthcoming EP.

A self-avowed fan of Aaliyah and Sade, Sonya also throws a bit of Martina Topley Bird and Lil Kim into her otherworldly mix of Jeep-ready beats, politically/intimately pointed lyrics, and buttery smooth/tight trigger delivery. Aside from her solo work, Teclai has also performed with Phife Dawg as half of hip hop duo OZ. Her new single, “Own” was produced by up and coming Las Vegas producer DeAira and plays like a TLC track featuring Lauryn Hill flipped by Tricky. Check it, and follow Sonya, after the jump.
