Flash Review: Roots Manuva - Banana Skank EP

This week on Big Dada came the “Banana Skank” EP, serving as both a precursor to Roots Manuva’s upcoming full-length, and as a successor to his last album, 4everevolution. The rapper, whose natural flow has set him apart amongst British MCs, uses “Banana Skank” from 4everevolution from which to springboard this EP. Wafa provides a skanking remix of the title track. It is Manuva’s stonking version of “Banana Skank Part 2,” however, that stands out with its dark overtones and sinister vocals.

The EP starts and ends with lower key numbers that are propelled by casually delivered rhymes. “Natural” is set against carefully selected chimes while the erroneously named “Party Time” (Listen Here), sounds like it might be indicating the end of the party with its stripped down buzzing basslines.
