An English teacher in Boyton Beach, Florida has been suspended for three days after assigning eighth graders Lil' Wayne lyrics to analyze. As if these kids aren't already listening to Lil' Wayne.
The teacher reportedly gave the kids uncensored lyrics to Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" and told them to find all the uses of figurative language. The head master Wayne Owens says that the kids had been struggling with identifying things like metaphor, simile, pun, and other literary devices by learning Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe, so the teacher tried adjusting to the level of the kids. Parents like Vanessa Guzman thought this was "crazy. “They shouldn’t be teaching this stuff in school for language arts. I mean, who in their right mind would give kids something like this?”
To be fair, while the lyrics probably should have been censored, isn't it naive to think that these kids are hearing new curse words in eighth grade via a Lil' Wayne song? If anything, it's a creative effort on the teacher's part that ended up horrifying out of touch parents - Max Weinstein
