With three Lord of the Rings movies all blockbuster successes, and three Hobbit films ready for roll-out, Fox Searchlight looks to have their own set of box office success by bringing the man behind the shire to the big screen.
David Gleeson (Cowboys & Angels) is reportedly writing a script about author J.R.R. Tolkien, which finds the project only being called Tolkien for now.
The Los Angeles Times reports that The Front Line indie Irish filmmaker knows his way around Middle-earth. Tolkien will explore the late author's life, his formative years at Pembroke College, and his time as a soldier during World War I.
The legendary wordsmith was born in South Africa in 1892 and raised in England. Tolkien went on to serve in the Great War, where many of his closest friends were killed in combat. Those experiences would come to be feelings he would channel during his world-creation of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. There has never been a major biopic about the writer before, so this one looks like it may be a winner. No word on whether Tolkien's estate will work with producer Peter Chernin's Chernin Entertainment or Fox Searchlight on this movie.
