Friday Rewind: 10 EDM Hits To Kick Off The Weekend
Kick off the weekend with these top 10 dance music releases from the past week, curated by DJ, producer and vocalist Lea Luna.
1. Dave Aude vs Luciana- “You Only Talk In #Hashtag”
Dance music’s chart-topping, hit-making duo Dave Aude and Luciana are out with their colorful new video, “You Only Talk in #Hashtag,” where you see London-bred Luciana strutting Hollywood Boulevard in an amazing dress by Jeffrey Bryant (designer for Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran). Luciana tells VIBE: “Hashtag is a social commentary about the fact that it’s so difficult to truly connect these days as we only ever talk in #Hashtags! We live in a society where we have to be quick to get #heard; the song is poking fun at how we communicate.” Luciana needn’t sweat it, this clever song is sure to go viral whether it’s hashtagged or not!
2. Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne- “Rather Be” remixes
Another British electronic act is taking over the globe. Recently, “Rather Be” became #1 on Spotify in 13 countries, made Billboard’s Top 10 “Hot Dance/Electronic Songs” and entered the record books as the longest running #1 in the history of the UK’s Official Streaming Chart. Before setting sail for their first ever North American performances in June (as well as an appearance NBC’s Today Show on June 19), they’ve brought the world three fresh remixes of this unforgettable tune led by a banging uplifter by Cash Cash and Valley, exclusively on Spotify.
3. Nero- “Satisfy”
Since their last platinum-selling single “Promises” in 2011, EDM fans everywhere have been hot for Nero, anxiously awaiting another hit. Finally, Nero is here to “satisfy” us all. Just as any Nero fan would expect, this song is huge. The expertly produced combination of menacing beats and beautiful vocals we’ve grown to know and love has come through for us once again wonderfully, just in time for festival season. Brace yourselves for sound satisfaction.
4. DJ Dan and Mike Balance- “Shake That”
Firmly rooted in house music since it was born, DJ Dan has turned the heads of DJs and won the hearts of club-goers for many years. As DJ Sneak said: “Dan is a pivotal ingredient to live DJing and production, a real teacher to all.” The funky elements of Dan’s brand new full-length album, Nothing but a Party, make it impossible to stand still; you’ll be up and shaking it by the first track entitled “Shake That,” which boasts a classic booty-house vocal, and collaborative production by the talented Mike Balance.
5. MK- “Always” feat. Alana
The recent resurgence of nostalgic sounds in house music is refreshing, and if anyone can pull off an old feel in a new track with class, it’s MK. Known for his classic sound, MK seeks to tie in his signature house vibe with the best new production elements. Here, he draws inspiration from friend and fellow producer, Route 94. After Route 94’s own remix of “Always” exploded on the dance scene late last year, MK decided it was time to throw it down for ‘Always’ once more with a fresh new, MK Area 10 remix. Well done.
6. Swanky Tunes feat. C. Todd Nielsen- “Fire in Our Hearts”
Those in favor of big EDM vocal anthems better tie their shoelaces tight before Todd Nielsen can say, “The fire in our hearts is takin’ over,” because the builds and drops in this tune are not for the fragile of heart. Swanky Tunes, known for their international mega-festival sets and leading dance music label electro monsters have done it once again. Hear a preview of it here, as premiered on radio by Hardwell where he labels them the “Russian House Mafia.”
7. Sidney Samson- “Trojan”
Forget big-room, Sidney Samson has just gone gigantic-room with “Trojan,” which has a nice melodic lure that blasts off into one of the most speaker-shaking drops you’ll hear all year. Colossal sound systems beg for tracks like this. Hold on tight.
8. Five Knives- “Savages” (Pretty Lights remix)
What’s better than a great song? A Pretty Lights remix of a great song. What’s better than a great remix? A FREE DOWNLOAD of a great remix! This is the first new work Pretty Lights has put out since the release of his album A Color Map of the Sun, and “Savages” is a new song from Five Knives, who are currently in the studio working on their debut album. Their song “The Rising” is at #9 and climbing on the Billboard Dance Chart. Have a listen, and have a download courtesy of Red Bull Records while you’re at it.
9. Maor Levi- “Together”
How about a happy chord progression and sweet, sticky vocals to go with big synth reminiscent of champagne-spraying Miami or Vegas super-clubs for the summer? Maor Levi has won support from Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Romero, W&W, Showtek, Porter Robinson, R3hab, Benny Benassi, Morgan Page, Danny Howard for obvious reasons, launching himself into the international club circuit where not a single bottle of Ace can be sold without an anthem like “Together.”
10. Crookers- “Able to Maximize”
In a world of often cookie-cutter-sounding EDM, Crookers cuts through the cookies this with “wonky,” “mad” piece to keep things interesting. Electro beats covered in filthy techno sweetness are a great canvas for a little…pan flute? The flute and the vocal samples will make you chuckle, and the beat will make you bounce. If you don’t “get” this track, well, you just don’t get it.
