Friday Rewind: 10 EDM Releases That Jumped Off This Week

Sarah Polonsky / June 6, 2014

Kick off the weekend with these top 10 dance music releases from the past week, curated by DJ, producer and vocalist Lea Luna.

1. Oliver Heldens and Becky Hill- Gecko (Overdrive)

Oliver Heldens had great success with the original release of Deep House hit “Gecko” which has recently been elevated by an irresistible pop-inspired vocal from Becky Hill. The marriage of house and pop is tastefully hit-worthy in the song, while the marriage of the middle-aged actors in the music video is passionately cheeky.

2. Kayper- Someone
Internationally renowned DJ and producer Kayper has just released her newest record “Someone,” which features a killer deep groove with breezy summer vibes all over it. The catchy, down-pitched vocal loop has a ‘90s flavor to it, which makes it tough for the listener to decide between sipping on an umbrella drink and hitting the dance floor.

3. Aaron Smith- Dancin feat. Luvli (Krono remix)
It seems from his cheerful RnB-style vocal that Luvli really wants to dance. This flawless deep house selection exudes a pinch of that chilled “French touch” sound with hints of Rhodes and pretty synth arpeggios that tickle your ears. With massive amounts of plays on Youtube and Soundcloud, it’s exciting to see that this coveted hit finally became available on Beatport this week via Moody Recordings.

4. Darin Epsilon feat. Ghost WARS- All That Could’ve Been
This record is a true gem. The chord progression, the songwriting, and the vocal make it not only a great track for DJ mixes (such as Paul Oakenfold’s Planet Perfecto), but a song for listeners to sing along to and remember beyond any EDM fad. It’s a very proper production by Darin Epsilon, who is gaining incredible momentum in his hometown of Los Angeles, internationally and even made VIBE’s “30 DJs To Watch 2014” list.

5. Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, and Tujamo- Delirious (Boneless) feat. Kid Ink
When “Boneless” came out last year it was a huge Ultra hit. This past week, Steve Aoki revealed a fresh spin on this massive favorite with a vocal version courtesy of LA rapper Kid Ink. The song has burst into the urban realm with fire, getting spins on the most influential hip-hop stations across the country. With just as much hit potential as it had before and more, “Delirious” will be climbing completely different charts in no time.

6. Adrian Lux- Lauren Conrad
You can’t help but wonder exactly where the title “Lauren Conrad” comes from on an EP entitled “Make Out,” but one thing is certain: making out is exactly what this tune is good for. A story told with breathy, sultry vocals layered on a pulsing bed of analog sidechains lush with melody like this is a perfect way to set the mood.

7. Basement Jaxx- Never Say Never (Mark Knight remix)
If you’re looking for pure house music to get your weekend on, look no further. Basement Jaxx are old-school curators of musical genius, and it’s thrilling to hear an official remix of their great work “Never Say Never” by Toolroom Records’ main man, Mark Knight.

8. Brandon De Carlo- Ordinance
“Ordinance” is tech house with a tribal feel, great for carrying a late night mood without any nonsense. Check out the other track on the Ordinance EP called “Lights Out” as well. The two songs make a well-rounded release for Philly’s 611 Records.

9. Porter Robinson- Lionhearted feat. Urban Cone
Porter Robinson’s single “Lionhearted” sung by Swedish Indie-pop posse Urban Cone is an expertly produced, uplifting, summer anthem that is for festival attendees that blur the genre lines. It’s a dance between indie and EDM on one floor, setting high expectations for the rest of Porter’s highly anticipated forthcoming album Worlds.

10. Andrew Bayer- Bullet Catch
This song is a double-threat of both pretty and party. The first beat drop makes you think it’s going to be party electro the whole way through, and then, out of nowhere, a hypnotic, melodic breakdown of ethereal synths and trance pads comes in, giving you chills from the gorgeous chords. It’s a crazy ride between beautiful builds and fun drops the whole way through.
