“Ignorant Shit” (2007)—Jay-Z feat. Beanie Sigel”

“This was originally the first record we did for The Black Album, but it got leaked by accident from someone associated with Baseline. The kid who had the song was tricked into giving it to somebody. But that was one of the best things that could have happened for “Ignorant Shit” [because it made it to] American Gangster. And to freshen it up–the last line where he says, ‘The first thing I’m going to do is free Sigel.’ Beanie had never intended to be on that song because he was still in jail when it was first recorded. So I told Jay, ‘If you are going to say that, now that Beans is home we might as well add him on to the song.’ It just made sense. Because if that hadn’t have happened Jay would not have eventually realized how dope it was. People loved that leak to the point Jay started to look at me like, ‘Yo, why didn’t you say something?’ And I’m like, ‘What do you mean? I was the one pushing you to put it on the album.’ So we decided to put it on American Gangster.

And Drake murdered it as well. I think him and Wayne both destroyed it. I was definitely surprised because that was one of the first times I had ever heard of Drake. I didn’t know what dude’s deal was. But after I heard that, I knew he was serious. In fact, there have been a lot of MC’s who have bodied “Ignorant Shit.” Lupe killed it, too.”
