Soon You’ll Understand” (2000) –Jay-Z

“I remember when I first started falling inside the Roc-A-Fella camp. Everybody was loving what I was doing with the exception of Jay-Z. I would send him tracks here and there and I would never get any real feedback. I was working with everyone else in the crew, but one thing my manager would always tell me is if you could just get in the studio with Jay one-on-one and work from scratch everything will work out. Eventually I got the chance to do that. We did “Stick To The Script” and “Streets Is Talking” back-to-back. We ended up doing 35-36 songs over the course of the next few years. One of them was “Soon You’ll Understand.”

That was the first record where Jay let me do whatever I wanted to do in terms of making the music more dramatic. Because what he rapped to originally didn’t have a lot of drums and effects that were in the finished product. At first I was a little cautious about adding on [to “Soon You’ll Understand”], but Jay told me, ‘This is your record…do what you want to do. If I don’t like it, I don’t like it.’ That was my real introduction to being a true producer… just having a vision for a song and executing it properly from beginning to end.”
