“What We Do” (2003)—Freeway feat. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel

“This is an ill song because originally it wasn’t supposed to be a posse cut. “What We Do” was when me and Freeway were just going into the studio and banging out records everyday. Jay didn’t come to a whole lot of the sessions, but he came to one because him and Freeway were doing something else. So this was the second record I played him and Jay was like, ‘I’m getting on this… right now!’ He went into the booth and did it right there. It wasn’t planned, but with the intensity of it, Jay was feeling it so much that he wanted to rap on it. And that’s the best thing. It’s the difference from asking him to be on a record to when he wants to get on a record. I think it’s like that with any artist. When the spirit strikes you, when you start thinking of ideas right then and there, the intensity is always going to be greater. And then Beans just closed it out and took it home.”
