George Clooney Arrested During Protest at Sudanese Embassy

George Clooney, along with his father journalist Nick Clooney, was arrested in Washington, DC outside of the Sudanese embassy after participating in a protest against Sudan’s blocking of humanitarian efforts to feed the nation’s starving citizens. After three warnings by police, the Clooneys, along with Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Rep. Jim McGovern and Rep. Jim Moran and former Rep. Tom Andrews were led away from the embassy by Secret Service agents.

Just days prior, Clooney was a guest at a White House banquet in honor of the British Prime minister, and also testified before Congress against social and political in Sudan. Speaking before the Senate Foreign relations committee, the Oscar nominee testified that South Sudan’s secession from Sudan has led to crises on the borders of both countries. He insisted that more aide be sent to the African nations.

"We need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world," Clooney said at the protest. "The [Sudanese] government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them, and stop starving them."

Max Milien, spokesman for the Secret Service, cited that the actor was being charged with disorderly crossing of a police line, which is a misdemeanor in the district. He was transported to the Metropolitan Police Department for processing, after which he was released on a $100 bond after cooperating with authorities.

"Paid a fine, we were all in a cell together, it was nice," Clooney told reporters. “It is my first arrest, thanks for asking. And let's hope it's my last." -- Iyana Robertson
