Text messaging has gotten a bad rap. And between all the folks texting at school, texting at work, texting behind the wheel, there’s probably a good reason for that. But, consider this: After Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005, the Red Cross collected about $400,000 through text message donations. Three days after the earthquake in Haiti? mGive, the company that works alongside the Red Cross to take in donations via text message, has raised more than $4 million, while Wyclef’s Yele organization has raised more than $1 million. So, what do we have to say about text messaging now? Um…FTW? ––Chris Yuscavage

Oh, and you probably already know this, but if you still don’t, you can text the word “HAITI” to 90999 to donate 10 bucks to the Red Cross or the word “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 to ’Clef’s organization. Or give your thumbs a rest and click here or here to do it online.
