Grand Jury Votes To Indict Parents in JonBenet Ramsey Case

A grand jury voted to indict the parents of slain 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey in 1999 that pit the Ramsey family as the prime suspects for years, Daily Camera reports.

In December of 1996, JonBenet was found bludgeoned and strangled to death in the basement of her family's home. A ransom note from an anonymous group of individuals representing "a foreign faction" sought $118,000 in exchange for the safe return of JonBenet who was found just hours before, with no kidnapper or murderer ever linked to the scene.

The child's parents became the subjects of intense investigation only to be cleared of the case in 2008 because of then newly discovered DNA. Then-Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter told media back then that he did not believe his office had enough evidence to file any charges against the parents. JonBenet's mother, Patsy, had died 2 years earlier in 2006 of ovarian cancer, thought still considered a possible suspect.

Investigators then reopened the case in 2010 and conducted a new round of interviews with witnesses but nothing of interest was uncovered, according to ABC News.

If JonBenet was alive today, she would have been nearing her 23rd birthday on Aug. 6.
