High on Sex: Shanell Drops ‘Nobody’s Bitch’ Mixtape

With her trademark nose ring and bedroom eyes, singer Shanell has always stood out aesthetically from her fellow Young Money collective. Yesterday, the singer released her new Nobody’s Bitch mixtape. VIBE was on hand for a special preview last week at NYC’s Jungle City Studios. The mixtape is “sex and partying from a woman’s perspective,” said the diminutive singer in a demure knee-lenth skirt, offset by a bright yellow bra. The operative word here is “sex.” From the opener, “Fuck Me Daddy,” it’s clear that Shanell is not shy about what she wants (and clearly gets) in the bedroom. Brash and in-you-face, the bulk of the record is uptempo dance with production provided from the likes of Derek Allen of Mad Decent fame. Party songs like “Turn Up” and the cheeky “Hoes Be Winning” continue the high octane wave that borders on monotonous at times. In fact, it’s in the slower numbers, like “Last Time” featuring Busta Rhymes, that Shanell’s vocal range shines. The latter also finds Busta in a more seductive mood than we’ve seen of late, and for fans of his sultry “What’s It Gonna Be?!” collaboration with Janet Jackson, it’s a welcome return. Aside from Busta, Nobody’s Bitch is largely devoid of presence from other YMCMB members (although the label’s president Mack Maine and Birdman were on hand to preview the mixtape). Whether conscious or not, this is a smart decision for the burgeoning singer as historically, the most successful YMCMB artists have been those that have proven themselves separately from Lil’ Wayne and the camp (e.g. Drake, Nicki Minaj). It’s time for Shanell to show and prove. @SowmyaK
