Homeless Filipino Boy Wins $130,000 International Children's Peace Prize

Homeless Filipino Boy Wins $130,000 International Children's Peace Prize

Adelle Platon Posted September 26, 2012

There is something to be said about those who give when they have nothing.

A homeless boy named Cris "Kesz" Valdez was named the 2012 winner of the International Children's Peace Prize after turning his struggle and misfortune into a program that has given back to the impoverished children of the Philippines. The 13-year-old recalled living with an abusive father, running away at four to join other kids on the streets.

"I did not have a lot of money … but I had a lot of love to give," Kesz explains in a short documentary.

Kesz channeled his generosity into establishing an organization called Championing Community Children where he and a dozen volunteers dedicate their time to educating the local community children about rights and hygiene, and instilling hope. In addition to the reward, Kesz was also given $130,000 to go towards his charitable cause.
