It looks like there's a new King—or should we say Queen—of the box office.
The wildy popular The Hunger Games hit big this weekend at the box office, taking in $155 million in US weekend sales.
The film, as Huffington Post reports, is the third highest opening weekend of all time based on Lionsgate estimates. It stands only behind The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," which during their opening weekends garnered $158.4 million and $169.1 million, respectively. However, this makes The Hunger Games the highest selling non-sequel weekend sales.
It beat out all three Twiight opening weekends, most notable the series' highest weekend seller New Moon, which gained $142.8 million in its opening weekend. With two more books in the series, it's looking like The Hunger Games will be the next big franchise for the coming generation.—Keenan Higgins
