Introducing August Alsina, an R&B Crooner Unafraid of Making a Masterpiece

August Alsina isn’t the type of guy who tells you his music “is going to be hard, going to be awesome.” He’s more of the type of guy who will tell you that his mixtape, The Product 2, due May 6, is a brilliant f%#ing masterpiece.

Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Alsina’s smooth R&B hooks come with a little hard knock mentality. Alsina comes from the streets. Only last year they claimed the life of his brother.

On a different trajectory now, Alsina is breaking through with one impregnating track after another. He touched down with the 2011 debut mixtape, Acoustic Covers, complete with his own take on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and Lil Wayne’s “How to Love.” There’s the Spinz & Dun Deal -produced stripper shout-out, “Get Ya Money,” where Alsina croons “I ain’t judging you, go and get ya money…,” and, of course, “I Luv This Shit,” his collaboration with fellow Def Jam artist Trinidad James.

“That’s just a lifestyle song,” Alsina tells VIBE of “ILTS.” “People, they just loved it because it’s relatable…That’s what I’m about, just trying to do relatable shit.”
