Hip-hop boss man Rick Ross is taking his talents to the Starz' crime drama Magic City. The South Beach rapper makes his acting debut on the Miami-based show, set in the 1950s post-Cuban revolution, as Butterball, who runs an illegal gambling operation.
For those late to the party, Magic City centers on Ike Evans (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the owner of MIA's glitzy hotel, the Miramar Playa. He strikes a deal with mob boss Ben Diamond to ensure the success of his establishment. Now in its second season, the Mitch Glazer-helmed show is laced with more than enough mob drama and moral dilemmas to keep viewers occupied.
VIBE caught up with Morgan to discuss how the MMG leader was recruited for the role and what it was like working with him.
"Rick Ross is awesome, he’s great. He’s got such a presence on film," he says. "In the show, Mitch wrote a role for him because Rick loved the first season and came in and visited the set. He just wanted to hang out with us and took a tour of everything. He was talking to Mitch and Mitch said, 'Hey, would you like to do a role in this?'"
According to Morgan, it isn't Ross' first rodeo on a film set either. "I had done a movie with Rick five years ago called Days of Wrath. It never came out. I knew he was a good actor and sure enough, he said he would love to do [Magic City] and he came off his tour and blew the doors off this role. It was great having him around."—Adelle Platon with additional reporting from Camille Augustin
