Lady Gaga has her little monsters to thank today. As of yesterday, her latest album, Born this Way, has sold 1.1 million copies,
since its release last Tuesday, Nielsen SoundScan reports.
This number comes as a surprise to the pop songstress' label, Interscope Records, as they guesstimated first week sales marks below 500,000 units. Amazon.com catered to the speculation when the website initially listed the album for sale at a meager $.99-cents. However, as of today, the website has reported to have sold over 440,000 copies of the album at that price.
Gaga becomes a rare addition to the club of a million first week sales, coming in at the number 17 spot, alongside artists such as 50 Cent, Taylor Swift, as well as NSYNC, who holds the number 1 spot for 2.42 million sales of their album No Strings Attached (2000).
Digital first week sales for Born This Way, topped off at 662,000, making up 60 percent of the album’s overall sales and making Lady Gaga the first artist to achieve that in Nielsen SoundScan history. Lady Gaga is truly living on the edge of glory. —Tyler McDermott
